Maybe someone is a little annoyed that they didn't get into the final...

A high tech rig should make no difference. Its all about angle and lighting.

The main factor is the artist's talent.

The second factor is software:
the subject, scenery, and imaging software used.

The third factor is knowing how to set your PC up for the screenshot. Quality is not just about the hardware itself, it's your settings! All but the most terrible old PC's are capable of good screenshots.

If you have hardware that is not capable of running up to 800x600x32bit colour resolution with some filtering options, you haven't got much of a chance, everyone else needs to unlock the potential they have in their systems.

The judges actually look at the efforts made by the screenshot-takers.

Allow me to illustrate:

Look at Delta's shots... You can easily see the lines aren't the smoothest around. I had a shot that was much less jaggie... BUT... in the end the mods saw the amazing composition-talent in Delta's shot, where mine lacked in beeing extra-ordinary. Hence he got nominated and I didn't...

And I actually like that idea... It make you try harder the nect time and not settle for a generic shot.

And once again... the winners did deserve it!

ps: Delta; I hope you don't mind me using your shot, it's just to make a point, not critisim...  ;)

I thought my shot was going to make it this time, really liked the catch of lightning and the unusual lighting I got but in the end the superb quality of the other images was superior.

Contest = hammer it to the max. 1600x1200 even without fsaa will smooth a little when resizing

It doesnt have to be your day-to-day flyable detail setting for screenshot taking...

That's fine. ;)

The jaggies are due to the compression, I'm still working on making that better.  The 1280x1024 shot is much better because it has not been compressed.

But thats my problem.  I think that I have great composition in my shots.  I try really hard to get a good angle, lighting, the whole shabang.  I dont focus on quality, and yet, Ive never made it to the finals

To be honest i do reckon the quality of the shot does play a huge part. Cool angles etc do make a difference but if your running a truelly poor rig i somewhat doubt you will win, no matter what everyone will say... have a look in the hall of fame...

;D But i spose ive never even come close to winning so i cant really comment

Look at Mr. Mugels' blimp shot!!!!
TOTALLY AMAZING!!!!
It is dark, different, and speaks volumes!!!!

Dave

Actually it's "look at Mr. Mugels' ZEPPELIN!!!!! shot.

Don't tell me you need a million dollar rig to get that shot!  ;)

No you need a Zeppelin.

Groan not this topic again. PLease - as John Major said (former Prime Minister in the UK) and I think its probably a common saying; "If you can't stand loosing don't enjoy winning" or words to that effect. ;D

If people can't play then send them away. ;)
