Not again about...

Remote linking...  ;D

I'm just curious and eager to learn, not trying to bend or break the rules...

Is it ok if a member ( say me... cause I did it...) posts a url in a thread that connects to a airliners.net shot? I did this cause I know some people have a problem with copying and uploading airliners' shots overhere ( makes sense, so I don't do that)... but I can't feel like I was breaking the rules... can anyone clarify this to me please?

And secondly, I understand how these remote linked shots may temper with the forum speed, but doesn't linking to a website with lots of shots do the same?

Omag... full of questions...  ;D

Hi Omag. It's perfectly OK to post a URL in a topic as long as you don't post the actual linked image.

As for Anet, they provide a short URL (like this: URL (link) to this photo: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/963218/M/ ) above each image to make it easier for you. They wouldn't do this if there was any objection. ;)

What I sometimes do is to upload the picture to Simviation, and then download it to the Forum, at the same time acknowledging its source and accompanying the picture with: "courtesy of....."

Am I right...or am I right...?

LOL...

Kris, the reason why it IS ok to put in a link and NOT ok to the link in url brackets so that the pic shows is because if the pic is put in url brackets a) it steals bandwidth from that site, b) it can (somehow) cause problems to this site.

By putting in the link as Doug did there you have to click to view it. This causes a new window to open up and you view it, not from Simviation, but as a seperate thing in its own right - just as if you had typed it in on the web.

Paul, that is fine although there are folk who don't like it, but it is not wrong and it is accepted that by putting something on the web you put it up for people to download and load elsewhere. Providing they are not making money out of it in any way it is ok. Now if Pete had a service whereby we paid to view images... then yes it would be wrong to upload images from sources.
Not to sure on the law, but unless there is an express statement forbidding any use, copy etc  of the material I don't think there is much cause of concern.

Let's get this right Ben or it will cause more confusion. It's perfectly OK to put a link in URL brackets like this: http://www.simviation.com/lair/photos/da-hind01.jpg

The problem arises when using a direct link to an image hosted on another site & posting it so it displays in the topic like this:
Image
Note that both the above images are my own photos posted at my Lair which is hosted by Simviation. In this case I'm hoping the situation does not arise.

I don't visit Anet much so I'm not aware of their rules. I suspect the reason they & similar sites give a convenient direct link to the pages the photos are posted on is to prevent people downloading the images & posting them on forums as Paul suggested. They are all high-resolution images so even the smaller ones are probably outside the forum limits & therefore need editing to upload here. By being posted at Anet the images are copyrighted to the original photographer & they quite naturally object to people doing this sort of thing. I see no objection to downloading the photo for your own use or to look at when you're offline as long as no profit is made from it. This is very similar to the rules on any freeware files.

PS. The above image is way above the file size limit for this forum which explains one reason this is discouraged. It cannot be removed without editing this post, another very good reason. It might also take some time to detect a remote host & load the image which affects the time taken for the page to load. The whole idea is for this forum to function as smoothly as possible.

Ay Doug - I was agreeing with all you said, but I thought that we were talking about putting in url brackets images from anywhere, but Simviation, and whwn I said that etc blah blah blah... ;)

Using the URL brackets {url][/url} to link to an image is fine. This is no different from posting a link to a webpage that might have numerous images on it. It's the IMG brackets {img][/img} we're talking about here. Only images uploaded to the Simviation server are are allowed to be posted so they display in the topics (like the Staggerwing in my previous example). These images should obviously comply with the forum limits before being uploaded or posted in a topic. It's all explained here.

It's easy enough to make a mistake & I should know that more than anyone. I've made some right howlers in my time & even got out of bed in the middle of the night before now to correct them in the hope that too many people didn't notice. ::) :D

I knew what you meant but others might not. When you're explaining something like this where everyone can see it you have to try to make it absolutely clear to avoid confusing things even more. I really don't see how I can make this any clearer. ;)
