Composition Basics - Storytelling

Postby Digital Filmmaker » Fri Apr 13, 2007 7:09 pm

Rather than type the same thing over and over, I figured it might be worthwhile to share a few tips with the masses.

First of all, let me point out that I'm by no means an expert.  Filmmaking is an art.  All art is flexible.  What I like, you may not.  What you like, I may not.  But there are some "guidelines" you can use to improve your own creations.

As a filmmaker (hey, you're making films, right?), you're a story teller.  There's more to home movies than just holding the camera to your eye and pressing the red button.  In FS videos, you're out there all alone.  You're the director, the writers, the producers, the editors, and the FX gurus.  Think of the story that you want to tell, and tell it.

Your story doesn't have to be elaborate.  But you may want to consider the basic elements of any story, and apply them to your videos.

Plan out your video to include things like plot, characters (planes are people too!), setting, climax and/or anti-climax, theme, conflict and resolution...even music.  (Check out freeplaymusic.com for some great royalty-free music for non-commercial use!)

All stories need a starting point, a middle, and an end.  If you take that basic premise, and mix in some twists and turns along the way, you're bound to make better movies!

That's all for this tutorial.  It's brief, but if you guys would like more, say the word and I'll keep writing!
