Any good F1 racing games?

Postby machineman9 » Mon Mar 31, 2008 8:17 am

My friend and I have really gotten into racing games recently. We both have X360s and play PGR4 (Going to get grid later this year) and we are actually fairly high up the rankings- in the top 100 fastest in the world for one race course.

Anyway, we are looking for a new racing game, and we both really like F1. Are there any decent F1 ones either currently out, or going to come out? We would really like to be able to race each other (On Windows or X360)

Cheers

For Windows there is rFactor (see http://www.rfactor.net/), which has hundereds of mods for it, and many good F1 mods.

As for the 360, no current F1 games, as sony holds the exclusive licence, but that runs out at the end of this year, and (hopefully) Micro$oft will place a bid for it and release an F1 game on the 360.... At least I hope they do ;)

if you dont own a ps, rfactors your best bet. And god help us if EA get the license, they butchered the series. It's taken this long ot get it back to a decent state.

F1 racing sims have always been the domain of the Playstation, I remember the very first one on the PS1. It blew every other game out of the water, the graphics were phenomonal. After playing F1 on the Mega Drive, to get detailed scenery at EVERY track was truly mindblowing, especially Monaco  :o
I'm buying a PS3 tomorrow, with GT5 prologue, but will probably invest in an F1 game..just to see how they've evolved  ;D

When I went to France with school (man that was a dreadful week lol) I played on an F1 game on a PS3... I was expecting the graphics to be so much better, but they werent that great. Still, it was okay.

I remember F1 2000 or something like that on PS1, great game.

rFactor demo is installing now.

I envy Playstation for their F1 License , I played the latest version on the PS3 and it blew my eye's out.
That and GT are the only reasons I want a PS3, but hopefully Microsoft will place the bid.
Who ever said something about EA, I totally agree, they along with Activision have taken over.

To be honest, I still play the PC version of F1 2000.  :D

Pick up F1 championship edition asap. It'll take a while to really get used to it at first. But once you do you'll be amazed at how good it is.
Tips, firstly turn off all the driving aids with the exception of traction control and anti lock brakes. Everything else will breed bad habits and slow your learning process trust me. Your a big F1 fan and should know most tracks fairly well, so turn the racing line off. You spend more time watching that and running a slower lap because of it. Three good tracks to start out on, firstly France. It's really good fun to drive and is a good place to learn how to drive the kerbs, plus with the two fast chicanes you learn how well the car handles at speed. second track is bahrain, it's a good circuit to learn how to drive the fast straights into uphill/downhill hard braking zones. Finally Canada, as its a low downforce circuit so you get to learn the braking zones and how to handle the car with minimal wing through some tricky corners.
On the kerb thing, dont hit them, simple as that, till your certain of which you can use and which you cant (the final chicane at magny cours) just avoid them or you'll spend your time spinning out.

There's a man after my own heart..  :)

Proper driving  ;)

I got my PS3 today, from Currys of all places  :o   :o They price matched Amazon (the cheapest I could find!) which surprised me a bit..

I'll be looking into F1 games and that one will be top of my list, as you say I do know most of the tracks, Fuji is the only one I don't really know. It's a shame Suzuka isn't on the calendar anymore, I always found that track to be the best one to learn handling on, it had all characteristics.. a good series of esses at the beginning, long fast sweeping corners, hairpins and chicanes.

Ah well, my learning curve starts all over again..  ;D

Cheers for the recommendation Craig.  :)

the good news is, the most recent F1 game is from the 06 season so suzuka is still in there. Obviously its a shame you cant have the most up to date things, but its still fun. ;)

I've just had a look at my GT5 case, Fuji and Suzuka are 2 of the tracks.

Happy days

EA butchers A LOT! They got the exclusive license for NASCAR just when papyrus made probably the best nascar sim to date. Then EA releases Nascar Sim Racing, a sim that can't even get the flag rules of the sport correct.  It failed horribly, so EA decided to not even try to make another racing sim for the PC. Instead they pump out the crap games for the consoles only.  They have the exclusive rights though through 2009, so PC Nascar Simmers are SOL.  Papyrus Nascar Racing 2003 was selling on e-bay for $100+ because people were willing to pay that to get a good nascar sim.  Finally people are switching to rfactor for stock car racing via unofficial Nascar mods, mainly because the servers have been shut down for Nascar Racing 2003.

Grand Prix Legends (if you can find a copy) and Geoff Crammonds GP4 (Dont know if you can get this anymore) both for the PC. GP4 i still get out now and then for a drive but it always was a swine to set up and CTD's were common. No online play (or there wasnt) but theres loads of mods for it.  I guess modern PC's will cope with it easy unlike us who bought it when it came out and struggled like heck just to get it running smoothly!!

Grand Prix legends is another beast altogether. You may think you can drive but this is somthing else!!!  You can play this online and there are mods for it, enough to cobble dogs with. Both are old now but if you fancy a real challenge with proper tracks then GP legends is the one..... :) GP4 more for the novelty value i guess and the shunts you could have at eau rouge......
