Photo sizing.....

I have photos that I would like to submit to this site, including for this contest....to which the one I did submit was the only one I could effectively size, then someone commented that it was to small.......sniffle sniffle, I have never heard that before.......

anyhow, now that we have had a laff, I want to resize a screen shot that measures untouched at 464K and is 1448X880 if I mess with this....to get it to 150kb then it looks like crap. so what do you all use for screen shots? (I have fraps, (looks like poop) so now I am using screen grab.....any pointers....anyone want to kick my photo around so I can post it?

I really would of put this in the sim v photoshop or what ever it is called, and it is not to small for the contest,
I personally use the default Screen shot thing, or I use windows to take a screen shot. I then upload to photobucket then resize to what ever I can to meet the x<150kb

What works for me is to do the in-flight screenshot, directed to a folder in my Windows photo gallery, then open the pic with "Paint", don't do anything but select "Save As...", then rename it and save as a jpeg.

Then I upload using the site upload feature, then simply follow the instruction(s)......on occasion I get a "...too large..." error notice.

If that happens and I wanna really post the pic badly, I re-do with tweaked screen resolution then go through the .bmp to .jpeg conversion again.

I tried the photobucket thingie, and another one also, but found I get the same results with a lot less steps by simply using the photo gallery conversion technique......I can go from snappin' the screenshot to an actual posting the pic in just a couple minutes.

Irfanview is definately the way to go.

Simply capture the screenshot using the in-game print screen function (By default for FSX I think this is 'v'). Or use print screen key.

Paste/open the screenshot in Irfanview

Use the 'Image' drop down at the top. Resize it. Set it to whatever size you like (the maximum horizontal size is 1024)

Save as jpg.

You should be able to set the size that Irfanview saves it at what size you like. When you select to save as a jpg you should get a box with specific saving qualities. Check the box beside 'Set file size' and then in the box enter the number. The maximum for SimV is 150kb per image, but it is best to set this number lower. It will then select the closest compression rate to this value. Entering 130kb aught to mean it is well within regulations.

Just because you give some 12 year old gold member status doesn't make them "knowledgeable" by any stretch of the imagination.
(No offense Hagar, I'm sure that you're very intelligent, I'm making a point.)
I wanted Hagar to SELL us the product he's pitching.

As this appears to be aimed at me I'll give you the courtesy of a reply. First of all let's get something straight. I'm 66 years old & don't claim to be any more intelligent than any other member of this forum. Post count means nothing here.

If you care to read my earlier comments properly you will see that I'm not pitching any specific product. You're the one doing that.

gregj's original question mentions photos but if you read on you will see that what he really means is screenshots, specifically one that he entered for the October Screenshot Contest. The rules for that contest clearly state that no editing is allowed. All he really needs is an application suitable for resizing his shots, together with a few tips on saving them in a format & file size to comply with the forum rules.

I'm simply pointing out that you don't need expensive professional quality software like Photoshop to do that. There are plenty of alternatives available including freeware applications. Some have been suggested in this topic.
