Lighting sortie

Postby wifesaysno » Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:15 pm

The following shots are taken from a middle-campaign (1962) of a hypothetical "Cold War Gone Hot" scenario that is the basis of the combat flight sim Strike Fighters 2: Europe. With a couple expansion packs and the fantastic NATO Fighters 4+ mod the campaigns (1 each in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s) are extremely busy! Once in a 1980s mission I counted ~150 allied aircraft with ~100 Soviet fighters responding to our combined attack just South of East Berlin...plus the SAMs were thick and weather was bad!

Anyways, here are some shots of my current campaign (in 1962) flying the English Electric Lightning F.2...which I started after 3 failed attempts to do a USAF F-100 campaign...I blame the F-100's horrid dogfighting abilities! The Lightning, is an absolute slayer of Migs on the other hand

continued....

The Lightning's main armament consists of 2 30mil cannon and 2 Firestreak (or Red Top) IR missiles. I have to say, the Fire Streaks are far more reliable and powerful than the early Sidewinders (in the early 60s)

First kill of the mission: a Firestreak smokes another Mig!

Friendlies called out a Mig-17 below the cloud layer; now he thinks he can out run my Lighting! ;D
Mig-17s rarely go this fast, most I encounter will stay around 250kts and do gentle turns to try to sucker you into a turning fight...when they run, they cant out turn a train!
