Flying south for the winter...part 1

Postby Jayhawk Jake » Sun Dec 11, 2011 6:01 pm

Inspired by my good friend Jared, I decided to do a new journey.  Starting in Barrow, AK, the northernmost airport in North America, I will head south to Tierra Del Fuego.  I will be doing this in various Cessnas, but at the moment it seems like I will be favoring the Skymaster because I'm falling in love with it :-*

Anyways, starting the the Caravan I set out from Barrow -> Unalakleet -> Anchorage

Leaving Barrow at dawn.

Bit cloudy today ;)

A routine touchdown.  Interesting picture to me.  Wind Turbines, which I designed at my internship in college, and a Cessna C208, produced by my current employer

And we continue!  Heading towards Anchorage

I chose not to refuel in Unalakleet for no reason.  Made it to Anchorage with about 5% fuel left.  A bit nerve racking!  The short days in Alaska makes things interesting.  This was all on one continuous flight, took off at dawn in Barrow, and landed at night in Anchorage!

Picked up an old 182Q for the next leg, down to Sitka at night.  The 182 Nav-o-matic (yes, that's really what it's called) autopilot has no altitude hold but the plane is so stable it's a non-issue.

Next 2 posts will be the rest of my flights from this weekend, all the way south to the tip of the Baja peninsula.

Hope you enjoyed, comments welcome!  Stay tuned ;)

Fantastic shots, love the colors in #4. :)

Also, what's the purpose of the light located at the base of the wing as seen in #5 (between the 2 & 3 windows back from the co-pilots window)?
