@Club508........this aircraft first flew in the late 50s, the engines weren't as efficient as today's jet engines are :) ;)

@Club508........this aircraft first flew in the late 50s, the engines weren't as efficient as today's jet engines are :) ;)


You are sort of there...aircraft back then needed an extra boost on takeoff to get their highest payloads in the air so they injected water into the engine...makes a lot of black smoke and is generally bad for the environment, so it was outlawed.

As chuck and Jake said, back in the 50s the technology wasn't as good, and one thing that used to be was with the older jet engines, water was injected straight into the engine to cool the engine (hence the nickname 'water

Take offs were very smokey even when  Water Methanol wasn't used.
