Hi Larry...

Sometimes I confuse real aircraft with simulated aircraft.
On the DC3s and Otter there were four ski settings.
I guess the number of ski settings depends on the manufacturer of the unit, type of unit and installation.
On most ski equipped aircraft I flew the ski's could be operated two or three ways.
Electric with hydraulic back-up or free fall.
Keeping in mind there are no brakes with full ski we seldom used that setting. A lot of our ski landings were done with partial ski, at night on Hudson Bay between snowmobile lights or if lucky flare pots.
Keeping in mind that ice with no snow cover can be just as dangerous as glassy water, it took experience and crew coordination especially at night. There was no tower or ground control so an aviator had his hands full on landing especially at the end of a fourteen or more hour day.
Then you spent several more hours hooking up a Herman Nelson Heater, engine covers (usually covered in oil) and wing covers. Using a Herman Nelson Heater a crew member had to be present all the time so the crew took turns watching the dam thing didn't catch fire.
No hangers and no ground personnel to assist, it was a lot of fun...

Sorry to get so long winded Larry...

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
