Best way to explore mountains

Postby Daube » Sat Jan 09, 2010 11:51 am

Hi all,

Since I managed to download and install the new mountain addon from Arnaud Clere before the link went down (it's kind of a french speciality, don't you think? ;) ), I have taken some time to perform a test flight above Meiringen in Switzerland.

The new rendering of the mountains is simply amazing. It changes everything, and in the end, the perception of the mesh quality is magnified.

I departed from Meiringen as I said before. The view at takeoff was already quite nice, but I must say that it became more and more impressive as the altitude rose. The towing plane was making circles above the field, and I was so absorbed by the scenery that I almost missed my turn. I managed not to break the cable, however :)

I had set 16 knots of winds from North, so the rock slope on the left on the above shot was the perfect place to gain some altitude (I use CumulusX!). I released the cable and began following the mountain ridge.

Once I had enough altitude, the view on my left opened, and I could discover the next valley. I mean, look at that view... and that's only a compressed screenshot. In the sim, it's purely beautifull !  8-)

I crossed quickly the valley to reach Maanlichen and say a little hello. The rest of the flight was really excellent but I had to dive in the valley land land at Interlaken because I had no time left (soaring is cool and time flies, you know).

Hope you liked. Comments and criticism very welcome as usual. I have this feeling my gliding hours are going to explode in my logbook :)

[color=#000000]You're right about it being beautiful Daube. Shots 3 & 4 are amazing. Did I understand correctly, this is no longer available? Probably wouldn't work in FS9 anyway.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

In fact the addon is available again, but since you fly FS9, you probably don't need it anyway.
You see how FS9 replaces automatically the texture of the groud by Rock texture when the ground is sloped enough ? Well, this feature was quite limited in FSX. This addon brings back the FS9-style mountains in FSX.
Better than words, you might want to take a look at the comparison screenshots I posted in the FSX section. You will immediately understand what I'm talking about. :)
