Since I barely understand what I'm doing, is compression the down sizing to meet width and/or file size requirements and how can you tell from the picture?

Compression is a reduction in the image quality, to get a smaller file size.

Use gimp to edit your pictures.  It has a better compressor. ;)

compression hurt this one!

I've long wondered what that meant. I can see it now. I will do a few tests to see if I get "compression" in my shots. I am intrigued...
