There is no "but"...   A lack of hardware IS the problem.  8-)

Honestly, if you ever compare flying over.. for an example, Chicago in FS9 and THEN in FSX, you'll be amazed. FSX has 2x better scenery (my opinion) even at lower settings. Well enough, my frames are 10-12 with "Dense" Scenery and Autogen and other scenery settings full + 21 % boats, 0 % road traffic and 67 % WoAI AI, that's livable. With all settings turned up in FS9, your world still doesen't look as good. (Even though you get better frames, but that doesen't really matter - if you want more than about 15 FPS, well..)
FSX is absolutely worth it if you got a system that's less than 2 years old. If it's older, don't care about FSX.

I can play FSX decently with my Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 and a GeForce 9600.

PS: Don't waste your time saying "FS9 will look better with addons", because indeed it will - with PAYWARE scenery addons.

FSX is absolutely worth it if you got a Core 2 Duo/Quad or an i7/Phenom system/ + GeForce 9500-9800 GTX or a GTX 260-295.
ATis will not work as good for FS.

I have to disagree with that one. Many times I've had my FS9 mistaken for FSX, and I've used nothing but Freeware scenery. ;)

Stock out of the box, FSX looks a million times better (despite its cartoonish, over-colorful look), but what fun is it without smooth performance?

Try watching your favorite movie while hitting the pause button every second. Still looks good, but it's not very enjoyable. :-/

When hardware catches up completely with FSX, there will be nothing that can compare to it. Until that time, I'll keep on flying the smooth, fully maxed out, freeware filled, FS9 skies. 8-)

Personally, I'd rather have faster framerates with FS2004 with a lot of payware addons, than have FSX running with everything turned down so much that I might as well be flying fs2002 (or worse).

I think it is so easy to ignite this debate because FSX is/was not a "definitive winner" piece of software.
