B-52 in the Grand Tetons ( a flight relived)

Postby loomex » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:35 pm

First a story; While I was stationed at Minot AFB, I was assigned to the 91st CE squadron. One day we got a call for an emergency repair near the B-52 Simulator Building. The reason for the emergency work order is that the broken waterline went to the Building and was necessary for cooling the rather massive and old computer system used to run the simulator. We were able to complete the repair under the time frame I quoted. Because of that, my time was given time in the cockpit. Well, my chance came, we were flying in the Grand Tetons, avoiding the mountains while busting along in the valleys at 400mph. Franks scenery has given me the chance to relive that time with a few changes. First, there is no movement which takes away a key part of the simulation, but the scenery is so much better. The simulator and its massive computer system( at least 4 rows of ten tape-driven computers) drove the motions and the green wire frame-type scenery. Of course this was in 1991 and the USAF has completely upgraded the system.
Thanks Frank!

I work the WST's, CPT and T-4 ECM trainers at Barksdale. :)

Now, the WST runs off  PC's. :P

The new visual system uses a a spherical screen, and the "world" looks so much better compared to the old system.

I was in the 93rd CES at Castle in the early 80's. At that time it was the primary B-52, KC-135 training base for SAC.

After fixing a major problem in the main sim facility one weekend, the civilian contractors who ran the equipment let me spend some time in one of the full motion BUFF  simulators. It was an experience I'll never forget.

BTW, nice pics!

Like the first One the best. If the 2nd was in the old SAC camo, it would look like it was doing a covert bombing run in to Venezuela. ;D
