Rutan's aim was to design a twin, and this arrangement allows you to have the engines closer together than is normally the case in a twin, allowing much better single-engine manners. It also shaves a lot of weight off, and minimizes drag.
This required some rule-breaking, and in typical style Rutan ignored the rules and just investigated the potential of an asymmetric design. Turns out it flies great! His use of a laptop as the center of the instrument and control suite is also very interesting.
