the plane and ships look very nice... so does the water. the ground looks horribly flat and that is the only bad thing about it

Those FSX ships are really nice ... but I think these shots should be more dramatic.

The story you're telling is pretty exciting ... imagine the captain of that ship seeing that! He must be scared sh*tless! So add a little drama or horor. Experiment with the time of day and some really dense cloud layers. Try adding some dramatic lighting to it and maybe lower the camera so that it nearly touches the water.

In my opinion that would make the shot very dramatic. Here is an example of what I mean ...
