Playing With New Toy (video card)

I haven't figured out everything special about the card yet so these aren't #1 quality. I have to get tweaks and all that stuff. I have the GF8800 GTS

Fogged In Weather with a lock of 35FPS. Without Lock it goes to 40FPS+.



Medieval 2 Total War. One of the other games that I have that eats frames while maxed out. I had this maxed out. Extremely smooth gaming.
Look at the detail of the soldiers.

I think they are better now that I have tweaked it out a bit.

This is just the second day with the new card and I am makeing advances in the graphics like crazy.

Very impressive frames (I only dream of 40 FPS), and the card really makes your screenies look 10x better!

I wish I could get one, but alas I must cope with pitiful frames...

I'm looking into upgrading my video card (wish list) and found that the GF8800 GTS is considered a best buy:

I did not recommend that card. I would have recommended the 640 or 768 version and a processor/memory upgrade to handle the dataflow and not bottleneck the bus.


All I did was supply the Windows tweaks, driver and FS9 settings you see posted on these forums and being spread around.

I just wanted to make sure I was not getting credit for something I did not do.

Hardware recomendations are difficult to make, especially when only one component is being asked about or replaced. High output video adapters need more than just a card to get everything the card is able to deliver. It is important the rest of the system be balanced so the video card purchase is not a waste.

If the bandwidth the card is able to deliver is choked by the motherboard, CPU and memory, the results seen will be restricted. Most do not realize how much they loose by purchasing a fast video card and putting it on a slow platform. CPU GHz means nothing. Its the design and internal communication and calculation properties of the CPU that makes it fast. A 1.88-2.2gig Core2 will far outperform a 3.2GHz Pentium

On his current supporting components he will get excellent FS9 results but with a better motherboard and supporting platform, that would increase with the same card. The card is however limited to to 360mb of memory and because of that he will only be able to go so far with that purchase.

Since he is not using a the faster model/high memory card, his results will be limited and I can say the combination of his card and current hardware will not run FSX anywhere near as well as FS9. FSX needs a -minimum- 512mb video memory and a very fast CPU and memory combination in order to get close what one sees rendered in FS9.

What he has will work exceptionally well in FS9.
