as the never realized 707-700 engines upgrade debacle showed all too well

Eh?

So the 707/C-135s with CFM engines were upgraded by a 3rd party company...

Well, I don't know. ::)

I was talking about the never happened Boeing's upgrade on demand of the then still new 707's to CFM56 engines. Thing studied on the last 707-300 built (that was later re-engined normal JT3D and then sold to Morocco's army) and then rejected by Boeing (mainly because it would have eroded potential buyers to the then new 757), back in the 80ies. :P

As already stated, Douglas was WAY better. :'(

If a working 707 was ever upgraded to CFM56 engines (thing that I honestly ignore), it was without Boeing's help nor approval.

BTW, if a thing like that ever happened, could you give me more details, or even a link perhaps? Quite interested here. :-?

As far as I know the CFM only went into service on military 707s, like C-135 and the french E-3s.

Oh, that I knew already. ::)

I was talking strict civilian airliners. I do not practice military. I did 2 years non-virtual military service in the italian army that were enough for 24 lifetimes, without wanting to add on my computer nowadays. ;D

Thanks anyway. :P

Douglas forever. :'(

Oh, okay.

No, Douglas were the only ones to equip their old aircraft with modern engines.

Is the service so hard in the italian army? :D

(What can I say...nine months in the Bundeswehr...)

The truth? Had it been hard but straightforward, it would have been worlds better (and in fact the best memories I have of that times are the two months I was temporarily transferred in other corps). All I did was 24 months (well, 22) of being wary of petty officials and their petty interests in their petty careers.

When I signed in I was expecting something else. I hoped to be useful, to do something that made the difference, and instead ended up having to shield my @$$ for two years straight from corrupted, brown-nosing idiots (from higher to lower) obsessed with career 25/8. Chevrons or stars made no difference in the end, all the same crap.

A very nerve-wracking two years.

I guess not all the italian army is like that (or at least, I want to hope so), but can only speak for what I experienced.

In the end... why am I even writing this here anyway? :-?

Let's return to aviation, shall we? ;D

I was 18 at the time I entered there, and 20 when I finally got the hell away, and now at 37 still have nightmares of being in that rut from time to time. The most popular game played 24/7 there was "a tirarsela nel culo l'uno con gli altri", and for decency's sake I'm not going to translate from the italian (BTW, I would have problems to bring the real low-and-dirty meaning in english too). Use Babelfish or something if you want an idea, or ask me to elaborate in a PM. :(

I reckon there are a lot better things to do... and worse too. But hell, had I been in war... then... alright. But I wasn't in war, and still received the shaft in the backside of the peaceful times. I still wonder about my luck, even nowadays. ;D

The Babelfish translation I got didn't make much sense, but it had an awfully disturbing idea.  :o :P
