I'm on Strike!

Postby Jakemaster » Tue Mar 13, 2007 1:51 pm

Strike FIGHTERS, that is.

Dusted off this one, forgot how awesome and how much fun it is.  I got it for 5 USDollars, what a deal!!!  It's a great mix of fun and realism -  with easy settings its just fun fun fun, but when you make it harder it can be quite challenging and very realistic

Just some random shots taken during a quick flight session

I've got no tail!  Stupid tail guns (pun COMPLETELY intended :P)
Image
Don't worry, that Beagle got what it deserved from my sidewinder

What missle is this?  Should be easy to name if you have strike fighters and have watched the missles fired from outside.
Image

I flew for a couple minutes without the tail, actually, I shot down a few more planes.  Even followed a MiG down blow the cloud layer into horrid soup and killed it before pulling back up above the clouds and then finally the engines quit out.  I ejected safely (you can see the canopy if you look closely)
Image

New session, new plane.  Played it safe this time and took out the beagles with sparrows from a distance, then shot down this MiG with my machine guns

And you thought YOU were having a crappy monday!  :P

That's all for now, I LOVE strike fighters!  Can anyone suggest some good addons and instructions on how to install them properly?  Thanks...

Oh ya, comments, criticisms, questions, jokes, smileys, all welcome!

The "missile" is an AIM-7 and one of the worst medium range missiles ever...at least in real-life. It hits pretty well in Strike Fighters.

P.S: Next step is setting the settings to ultrareal, right? ;)

...it's better than its real life counterpart, but it still sucks majorly...

...all the missiles do :P

...the AIM-9B has about the hit ratio of a well thrown rock  :P

...when I hit that magical date in WoV and got the gunpods for my Phantom, my average kill per mission went up by 5  8-)

Nice shots by the way 8-)

Well I was flying on the harder settings for a while, but boy, it can be challenging.  These birds are like bricks when you throw them into hard turns.  So I took a break and set it to easy just to have some fun.  On easy the AIM-7 is accurate, at one point I got a beagle from somewhere between 20 the 30 miles.

I only fly on hard settings, it delivers about the best flying feeling you can get from SFP1.

You're not supposed to throw a F-4 into a hard turn. Just kick your burners and put some distance between you and your target.

And my AIM-9s mostly hit. It's all in the way you launch them. ;)

Note to self: Finish custom campaign for SFP:1.

Basic radar use:

- Switch on (PG Up)
- Set search mode/range (PG Up/PG Down)
- If targets appear -> (HOME) -> Marked -> (INS) -> Acquired
- If "In Range" light is lighted -> fire missile

You don't need radar for the AIM-9, just a good tone (loud!) and a good angle (straight from the 6, slight turn max always works).

Not that hard, eh? ;)

Missiles are actually a way more satifsying way to score, since it's quite hard to get the right target and stay in the quite narrow  launch/hit envelope.

Well this will help ::)

I don't know about missles being more satisfying though.  I mean, yes, it is difficult to get it JUST right, but at the same time guns is pretty much the same only you have to compensate for movement and all that so its difficult to get a good shot.

Somtimes the most satisfying kills are when you are in a dogfight and just cant get into a good shot and then finally you kill the enemy and its just like "YEAAAAAAAA!!!"

The guns in SFP1 are so good, you only need one or two hits to score.

The tactics is simply to get close and lay a short burst across the target (preferably down -> up). Done.

Air battle in SFP1 is not difficult. You can always hit your burners and run if it doesn't work out.

I'll have to look for this in stores. I've been looking for a decent air combat sim for awhile. F-16 Aggressor doesn't want to work on XP after my reformat for some reason, and my computer can't handle LOMAC.

Does it include the most recent variant of the AIM-9(M) which is supposed to be very accurate all-aspect, not just from the 6 cone. Also, does it include the AIM-120 AMRAAM?

Not by default, but there are billions of mods out there which can turn the entire sim into a modern computer shootout.

If you're too lazy to mod 'though, go and get Lock On.
It has all the modern bells & whistles you want.
