Battle of the X-planes

Postby killerbunny » Sun Mar 19, 2006 1:50 pm

Some time ago I saw a documentary on National Geographic Channel about the competition between Boeing and Lockheed Martin for the JSF contract.  I must say I instantly liked the Boeing X-32 (although I'm not exactly a Boeing fan ;)).  And what did I see some days ago??  Mr Ito uploaded his X-32 model! :)  It's not exactly perfect (most of the moving parts are missing, no hovering) but its good enough to make some cool pics :)  To make the battle complete I also trew in some pics of the X-35, or F-35 coz it won the contract.

Enjoy! :)

;D ;D ;D Damn that X-32 is the happiest thing I've ever seen!! :D Look at that smiley-intake!! What a happy, although butt-ugly- thing.

Nice shots, the third one is great, I just can't take it seriously because of that huge retarded smile.. :P ;)

Now admittedly, my taste in aircraft is a bit different from the average here.  I like the A-10 and the F-14, but I think the Eurofighter and F-18 are both bland and dull.  I also get bored by most civil airliners in a matter of seconds.

What do I think of the X-32?  It's hideous.  It's butt-ugly.  Actually neither the X-32 or the F-35 could ever be called pleasing to the eye, but the X-32 is uglier by an order of magnitude.  It should be able to hover simply because the ground wants to keep it at a distance.

Those are still nice shots, killerbunny.  I saw that documentary as well.  And all credit to Ito-san for adding to his already impressive list of FS9 downloads.  But I do understand why he never finished the project.

Superb shots but it has to be one of the most ugly aircraft I've ever seen!

Did you know that one of the biggest reasons it lost was because it was so ugly?

I really liked the X-32, a whole lot more than the F-35... As a matter of fact, I was in favor of it from start to finish of the race for the contract.  The intake makes it look like a toothless old man laughing ;D

That's right, I'm now using an AMD! I decided to give them another try and they

Actually, the reason it didn't win was it had a lot of design faults. Firstly the original design was too heasvy and they realised too late. As a result it couldn't pass the hover test without removing a lot of equiptment off the craft first. These two factors lead to its failure more than anything else

Looks do seem to play an important role in these X-plane competitions. There was a rumour floating around that one of the reasons the YF-22 beat out the YF-23 was because they preferred the Raptor's looks over the Black Widow's.

As for the X-32, I actually kind of like it. It's got a quirky charm that just appeals to me. Of course, this is coming from a man who also considers the Tacit Blue as beautiful. :P

Having strange taste is nothing to be ashamed of :P ;D

I know a lot of people who should hover then ;D ;D

It seems like the X-32 was/is a bit controversial ;)

Thanks for all the replies :)

I work at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. We have the x-32 sitting right next to the F-35. When you see them side by side the 32 really does look like a whale on crack, LOL.

I will post a link to some pictures when I return to work.
