Some great nominations so far. Not surprisingly, the DC-3 is gaining early momentum. Keep them coming and remember, your nominations don't have to be from the past Best Of the Best winners.  :)

No, THE workhorse of all time is the DOUGLAS DC-3!!!  70 years, and its still a very reliable, economical workhorse.  Your little C-130 lost to the DC-3 in the workhorse battle, so Im sorry, but THE DC-3 IS THE GREATEST AIRCRAFT OF ALL TIME!

In case you all didnt know, the DC-3 was the FIRST AIRCRAFT to bring PROFIT to its operators.

Still doesn't make it the BEST aircraft of all time ;).

This could be judged on a number of things;

Some aircraft were way ahead of their time [TSR.2, Avro Canada Arrow].
Some aircraft fulfill their roles extremely well [Boeing 747, F-15 Eagle].
Some aircraft fulfill a wide variety of roles [C-130, Boeing 707].
Some aircraft are ground breaking [X-15A, Wright Flyer, DeHavilland Comet, Harrier].
Some aircraft look stunning (opinionated) [Spitfire, Hawker Hunter, F-8 Crusader].
Some aircraft have been in service for years [DC-3, Canberra, B-52].
And of course, some aircraft cover more than one of these categories!

That's exactly why this poll will be really tricky to decide on, and why any 'winner' will not be conclusive ;).

Tweek, the main objective of the poll  is for everyone to suggest what they feel is the greatest aircraft ever created. I agree the results may not be conclusive, but hopefully we'll all have a bit of fun arriving at our conclusion. Sometimes it's the trip, not the destination.  ;)

The best aircraft of all time? For overcoming huge odds and being the only succesfull aircraft of it's type ever, has to be Concorde.

BTW, as much as I like them, the Spitfire and the B-17 did NOT save Europe. The main and most succesfull aircraft in the Battle of Britain was the Hurricane. If we had lost that battle, Hitler would have been clear to invade the UK and we were nowhere near prepaired for that and would have lost the war before the Americans joined us in Europe.
