If you're going to credit a SINGLE aircraft-type for saving Europe..  wouldn't it be the B-17 ?

;D You beat me Ashar. :P

You know, I have to wonder. We have all these polls on which aircraft is the greatest of all. But any aircraft would not be built at all if it wasn't for a specific purpose. I mean, sure you can go on about how great the Spit is because it served in the Battle of Britain, or the 747 because it made our world smaller and easier to access. All aircraft are the greatest of all. Because, without them, hell we wouldn't have a place to gather around and banter on which aircraft is greatest of all! :)

My two cents.

You gotta give some love to the B-52. It's hard to top a military craft that's expected to be in service for 90 years.

And I'm surprised the Wright Flyer hasn't been mentioned! It's the aircraft that started it all!

If you want to get technical, give all the credit to Bernoulli and Gallileo. :)

Well, technically...none of thses aircraft are the greatest...I vote for the Wright Flyer...had that thing not flown...there would be no DC-3, 747, 777 etc etc ::) ;D

Though I might of gone for the the C-17 simply because I had worked on them for a little over 5 years I would personally narrow it down (in no particular order)

C-130
DC-3
HUEY
F-14
F-4 Phantom II
A-10
And of coarse, the pinicle of current stealth (bomber tecnology) The B-2 Sprit

Yes I'm aware of the JSF and F-22 Raptor but I feel like waiting until there fully battle tested/hardend before putting them on my list ;)
