"Land Down Under"-The Crash!

Postby M.R.Maiornikov » Wed Jan 18, 2006 5:11 pm

The Story:

It was a warm summer day, the day like no other. The weather was perfect, mild wind made the the extreme temperature bearable for our human body.

After long day at work as a wild animal patrol officer, i came to my a somewhat isolated ranch in a small australian town called ANDAMOOKA. With population of 402, the main fields are close to the town, where semi dug-out homes are common. As the atmospherical conditions were perfect i desided to jump in my ol' Sterman Model 75 and take it for a spin.

When i reached the desire altitude. I was amazed by the amazing scenery that opened to my eyes. With low mountains in the back grond, all covered in dense forrests, with occasional farmer fields here and there, the landscape truly showed it's beauty under the tender lights of the australian sunset.
Image

This surely remindede me why, in my young day, i made the decision not to move to Sydney or perhaps Melbourne.
Image

As the sun was getting down and visibility started to fade, i decided to head back to my ranch.
Image

But all of the sudden, i heard a big explosion somewhere in the compartment area and the plane started to loose altitude dramatically.
Image

As the ground getting nearer and nearer and the speed is droping, i had to make a crucial decision. Wheather to bail out or try to land this plane in the dense australian forests, and hoping for a glimps of luck.
Image

Then, luckily, with the edge om my left eye i noticed a crop field in the middle of the forest. "Thank God"- i said to myself and decided to land there.
Image

So i started my final aproach. The landing was bumpy and , few times, a rock hit my front glass.
Image

But at the end, thanks to my flying skills, and blessings from God , i managed to land near the farmer's house. They very very kind to me and very helpful. Thanks to them, i spent the night there and in the morning began my plane reparation :)

Your speed was DROPPING while you were descending, does that airplane have speed brakes?  :P

Nice shots by the way!

Cheers.
