Is the 'XP38' the same as the XP11? I know of the P38 Lightning but always thought the XP11 as featured in The Aviator was a larger derivitive that never made production.
The XF-11 was made some time after the P-38 (the Lightening inspired its design). The goal was to create a super-fast, long-range recon craft (the SR-71 of its day).
Sadly, WWII was over when the first two prototypes were completed, and the government cancelled Hughes' contract.
Considering how expensive they were, Hughes decided to make the prototypes his personal planes. He took the first on a test run in '47, but an unnoticed oil leak caused one of the contra-props to go into reverse, making it yaw hard. Hughes attempted to land it in a nearby golf course, but it clipped 3 houses before it could get there, completely destroying the XF-11, and nearly killing Hughes.
After his recovery, Hughes refitted the second prototype with standard props, and it flew wonderfully (if a bit unstable at low speeds). Unfortunately, the military turned the XF-11 down, stating that the RB-50 was more economical.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!
