I was crossing the pond from JFK to London when the sun began to set

Then the show started with the sun still up

First time I have seen the Northern Lights with the sun still up

I'm wondering how you had enough runway to get off of JFK. :P

To answer both of your questions..

Yes the later version if the 727 had the range. It could cary 10780 gallons of fuel for a range of 3200 miles and the engines were upgraded to JT8D-17R, producing 17,400 pounds of thrust. Its MTOW was 210,000 pounds.

Takeoff could be accomplished in less than 6000 feet of runway at sealevel.

However to get this performance, which was taken from the aircraft manual, I had to modify the weights, engine data, and fuel capacity for the 727 I got from this site.

As downloaded the aircraft had a maximim fuel capacity of 8100 gallons, engine thrust set to 16,000 pounds, and the max weight set to over 1 million pounds.
