The forgotten classic, SR71

Postby simonmd » Thu Jan 12, 2006 1:58 pm

It amazes me that there is not a decent freeware SR-71 Blackbird especialy for FS9. I remember having quite a good one for FS2000 that had an opening canopy and access to the 2nd rear cockpit for navigation.

This model was originaly made for FS2002 but has been updated for FS9. It's a nice enough model but features none of the 'eye candy' that we take for granted on an average FS9 release. Doesn't even have an opening canopy for heavens sake! However, the unmistakable Blackbird shape is accurate enough and the textures look quite good in the 'right' light, ie, dark!

Have a harder look. I seem to recall having rather a good SR71 at some point for FS2002.

Which one is that exactly? I remember Krigl having a stunning Sr-71 spree including his comp winning shot. I'd like a Sr-71!

I remember trying that model out once. It's a great model, but it used SR-71 illustrations for the skin, which made it look weird from certain angles/lighting.

Currently, I'm using the David Bushell Blackbird. It's a great model (although it also lacks opening doors and has no VC), and a real blast to fly. The paintwork is also pretty good, although it could do with some dynamic shine (as well as more realistic afterburner effects).

The best SR-71 I've seen so far is Alphasim's one (which, incidentally, was designed by D. Bushell). It has a great VC and full animations. Had I the proper funds, I'd get that one in a heartbeat.

Not forgotten in these parts! Always been my favourite...unmistakeable lines, advanced technology (for it's time)...just a beautiful piece of work. Great to see it revived here in your thread simon.  :)
