Aurora Borealis

Postby flyboy 28 » Tue Jan 10, 2006 7:27 pm

In my six years flying the "modern" Flight Sims, (98-FS9) I have never encountered the Northern Lights. Until tonight. :)

Go into the FS9/Effects folder and look at some of the names for the effects files.  Some strange stuff in there including the Northern Lights.  There's even an effect and coresponding texture file for a shooting star, but I've yet to see that either.

As a matter of fact I saw a few shooting stars as well. Set the simulation rate to 16x or up and Slew faaaaaar away from the tower, and zoom out as far as you can. You'll see a few. :)

I first saw the northern lights back when I got FS2002. I've never seen a shooting star though

I remember my thread when I first saw the Aurora in Flightim (after 5 years of simming ;D) above Alaska, was flying the Captainsim E-3A then.  :)

Great shots, its quite an experience even if its virtual!  ;)

I've never fully understood how people never see the Northern Lights. I first saw them in FS2002 less than a week after I brought it simply by setting up the flight time and place right. Almost any flight after dark in the extreme high and low latitudes in Spring or Autumn will give you northern/southern lights.

However, I saw them for real this summer in Norway. ;D :P ;D

And the effect that always had me wondering was the texture file called "Tracer". :o

Are you sure it didn't come from an addon? I don't see an effect with that filename in my effects folder.

fx_dustcloud sounds interesting also

As I said it was in the effects texture file in FS2002.
