Anatomy of a boo-boo

Postby Censport » Tue Jan 03, 2006 1:24 pm

I was buzzing around Tokyo Bay in the 412, collecting screenshots of my ai boats to share with Curlyo, when I decided to check out the traffic at nearby Haneda (I had recently made changes to my PAI traffic). Unfortunately, I didn't check 34R closely enough...

They say that aviation accidents usually aren't the results of one big problem, but rather a collection or series of small problems occuring at the same time. Taking that into consideration, how many things do you see going wrong here at the same time?

I'll post the split-second-later shot after a few replies.

1) You're about to be hit by an Airbus of some kind. :P :)
2)I'll come back to you on that one. :D

EDIT: 3) Is that a starting line on the runway?

All right... you came in for a low fly-by but lost one of your contactlenses. While struggling to replace it, you accidenally released the collective, putting you right into the path of the oncomming airbus. The airbuspilot screamed like a girl while almost tearing out his yoke in order to overshoot you. Then, while your shoelaces get tangled with the rudderpedals, a freak gust of downwind forces your chopper down, while you hear the ATC-controller having a stroke as he's witnissing the ongoing events. Somehow your chopper ends up the runway, unharmed. You opened the doors to escape, but fall down as your laces are still attached to the pedals. So you removed your shoes slowely, cause your fingers are cramped from all the collective-grasping. But in the mean time a Japanese 747 didn't understand the final instructions the controller with the stroke was mumbling, came in from the wrong side of the runway to land, but didn't see you because of the sunlight beeing reflected right into the capitains eyes which leads to the fact he didn't perform a go-around... so you're screwed... ;D

Am I close?

;D  ;D  ;D

You know, now that you mention it...

But you'd think that Haneda would be too busy to pull double-duty as the local dragstrip.

Well you appear to be travelling at around 130kias, and the Airbus must be travelling at around 200kias by that time (I'm not sure of the actual take off speed and acceleration of a loaded Airbus A319/21?). So you roughly have a combined speed of about 330kias. At that speed, and at that distance, you aren't going to be able to pull any evasive maneuvers in a Bell 412 or a fully laden airliner!

That's what's wrong, I tells ya!

Also, you could have been watching the pretty planes on the ground, and not been looking where you were going! ;D

Omag, you crack me up! That was great! But I can't blame my contact lenses, as I wear none, and I usually wear cowboy boots, but it may have been the odd day where I had sneakers on.

Would you believe I could hear the ANA pilot's girl-like screaming over his engines AND mine?

Yeah Joker, I can be quite the sexist pig sometimes.

Had me in stitches, that. :D

Kinda sounds like me on a normal day.... ;)

Well, glad that the Airbus missed you, Censport, bad things would have happened if it hit you......

Lucky for me, he was delayed leaving Hong Kong. Something about hanging out with Northwest pilots all night...  8)
