Starting the new year in style!

Postby cspyro21 » Sun Jan 01, 2006 5:44 am

Yes, 2006 is here, and my first flight of the year was taken in a Becchcraft Baron 58 Turbocharged (thanks once again Clipper for the link ;)).

Image
Ready at EGGD, about to head down to EGTE. It wasn't exactly an 'ideal' day for flying.

Image
Away, as the wheels retract. I love the metallic purr of the engines. ;D

Image
I can barely see my house from here! :D

Image
Passing by Filton....I was taking the long way to EGTE.

Image
The weather worsened, so I decided to climb up to 5,000ft. At last, less turbulence!

Image
On approach to EGTE, fighting crosswinds and trying to figure out how the VOR in the Turbo Baron actually works. :D

Image
Note to self: Crosswinds + fog + light aircraft = not good.

Image
A little off centerline, but the crosswinds were quite strong  today. :)

I hope the new year holds good things for you guys!

P.S. If you want the Turbo Baron, search for "b58tc.zip" over on AvSim.

I'm sure there'll be many hours spent in the TBaron Cspyro. I agree with you, a great little plane with even greater sound. I hope you work out the VOR thing, I have a feeling that'll come in handy.. ;)

As it happens, I barely know anything about VOR, ADF, DME etc. My Dad's friend (who is also an aviation enthusiast) gave me a crack course about using ADF and VOR. He told me EGTE's frequency and nav radio codes, and I tried a short hop from Dunkeswell down to Exeter in the 172. That's easy enough to use, but the Beechcraft Baron's panel......where is everything? I found the VOR instruments, but they work incredibly differently than that of a 172 - that's what I'm stuck on. :)

Hi cspyro,

I have set up an ILS approach into EGTE (runway 26) using the default C172 & the new Turbo Baron. Both planes are at roughly the same place so that you can see the differences on the VOR indicators.

Image
The above pic is the default C172 & the below pic is the Turbo Baron. I have slewed both planes slightly to the right of each runway so that you can see both 'Course Deviation Indicators' (CDI's).
Image

As you can see, the VOR frequency for EGTE (R26) is set into the Nav1 radio (109.90) and the course is set on the VOR indicators at 260 degrees (R26 at EGTE is bang on 260). The CDI needle's are both slightly off to the left in both planes - a white vertical needle in the C172 & a 'broken' yellow arrow in the Baron (The 'broken' part of the arrow is the CDI in the Baron).

These are the only real differences between the two planes. The ADF is tuned to 337.0 but seeing as the NDB is now behind both planes, the yellow arrow on the ADF's are both pointing down (pointing behind us) (The ADF on the Baron is the 1st dial on the left - you can see the yellow needle pointing 'down').

Unfortunately I am going out very soon, but if you have any other questions just post 'em or PM me - i'll be more than happy to set up an MP & do an ILS tute.

Cheers,

TSC.

Thanks TSC, but you say that the ADF's are pointing behind on the aircraft, however on the Turbo Baron the arrowhead is straight ahead (?)  ???

The ADF on the Baron is this dial below, you can see the yellow arrow pointing down:
Image

This yellow arrow is the OBS needle on your VOR1 dial, this arrow is turned (using the OBS knob) to the same direction as the runway - in this case 260 degrees):

This is the ADF on the C172:
