Didn't one of the worlds worst aviation accidents occur on the island of Tinerife back in the '70s?

I do believe it was Tenerife.....the irony of the crash, was, that it was on the ground  ::)

What happened?

KLM 747 + Pan An 747 = BOOM (on runway)

In more detail:

Both the pilots mis-heard the ATC controller, the KLM pilot thought that the ATC guy said the Pan Am 747 was off the runway, the Pan Am guy said "we're still on the runway!" when the ATC guy said "stop, the Pan An flgiht are still on runway" when 2 people talk via the ATC radio, a funny crackling noise is heard, so the KLM guy kept accelerating and hit the Pan am flight.

(The reason the two pilots didn't see each other was because it was foggy)

I think it was something like 200 or 500 dead I forget

Still, that's pretty much it!

It was the most disasterous air disaster, until 9/11

Sorry for the bad use of "disasterous disaster"

If I remember the facts correctly, the margin of error was less than 10 feet. Had the plane taking off been not even 10 ft higher, the accident would have been avoided. Fascinating but saddening chain of events.  :'(
