There's a great golf course at that airfield that I've played on because Mrs Rollerball's auntie's husband is ex-US Army (they met during WWII in the UK). Because all the Retirees were pinching the best start times, they were made to play early or late so the Serving Officers could get a game in. So all the old boys only start queuing up in the dark to tee off! Not only that, but the keen ones do because most of em play about 4 or 5 times a week and know the course like the backs of their hands (for any golfers out there - guys in their mid and late 70s playing off low single handicaps - I ask you!). The local rule for poor visitors like me is if you tee off in the dark (and I did more or less, once) if you can't finds your ball after 5 minutes you drop and continue playing without penalty!

BTW

You mustn't be put off by foxes ambling down the fairway and lying under large bushes in the rough to try to keep cool. And don't worry about the little prairie dog like animals on the fairway. But if your ball goes in one of their holes you can lift and drop without penalty as well.

Great place, great people. How could you not like Americans .....  ;)
