kingfisher rejects

Postby krigl » Sat Oct 22, 2005 7:47 am

Hi, thought I'd post some rejects... or rather, brag about how I oh-so-cleverly messed with some effects files ;D

I recently downloaded USS Constitution, there's an FS2004 update. Here she stands on Bonneville Salt Flats near Salt Lake City, cue caption "who pulled the plug out".

Who pulled the plug out?!
Image

I moved her on the map screen to some nearby ocean and found that she popped into existance several hundred metres above the sea. She then obeyed the law of gravity.
Image

She has a nice "rough seas effect" (as well as cannon flashes and smoke) which I tried sticking on this Clipper. Mike Stone's, I think, here off Kamchatka - Petropavlovsk. The 'waves' come from the effect.
Image

I then downloaded the Kingfisher from FSWarbirds, nice model by Piglet... what a guy. I stuck Nicks All Wet on it plus the rough seas but for some reason the All Wet applied itself to only the outboard floats...
Image

I then added Carrier Group 2 from BiplaneFlyer's great Golden Age download site and stuck the Kingfisher in the sea by the carriers... but the detail on the carriers is not the highest close up, and the waves were hard to see.
Image

I then had a brainwave, attatch the effect to Carrier Group 2, but how? I changed the rough seas fx name to same as the carriers' wake fx and deleted the carriers' wake fx and suddenly all six were sporting a fine set of rolling seas all about them and I thought I'd go up to take a look.
Image

Unfortunately, the carriers now have no wakes, but that's almost certainly because they are at anchor :)
Image

I tried lots of combinations, positions, times of day, weathers etc. You know. Even a night shot.
Image

In the end the all too common weakness for sunsets (they just look fabulous, can't be helped) got the better of me and I went for a sunset shot... I liked this one but in the end I went for one where the waves are barely visible in the comp.
Image

Tarantara!!! The end..... just thought I'd share this personal odyssey with you, hope it wasn't too boring :)

Preparing for the comp was a lot of fun, I'm glad 'they' have organised it for this site...

Happy flying

That last shot is awesome! The shadows from the ships make that picture :)

Not at all...I was wondering how you made those waves... that shot is a serious contender!

Great pics

The "ALL WET" relies on the aircraft manufacture putting the right type and location of contact points into the aircraft.cfg file of watercraft.

If the points are not there or are not correct the FX will not show. More than likely the model builder forgot the main skid contact points (type4)

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!
