The relief textures are a nice idea, but they look strangely from close to the ground.

Yeah, there are even two versions of those relief textures, the "relief" effect of second version being even stronger.

The result is quite strange. The first version looks really nice from high altitude, but as said above, from low altitude it's really blurry and flashy.

Anyway, the idea from the author was really good, and this guy managed to modify all of the original FS ground textures, certainely by applying some photoshop filter. This was hard work! I just hope that this guy is working on a new version to give the right effect...

Fascinating....!

Has anyone taken any shots nearer, (1000/500) feet, or at ground level...?

As it's taking me up to 4 hours to download each file on dial-up, it would be interesting to see if the wait is worth while... ;)... ;D...!

Cheers all....!

Paul...

Still waiiting for the first 27 Meg file* to complete...3 hours so far... :'(...!

I've not really seen any textures that look good at ground level. Plus, most of the time you are in the air!

Most all of my flying is around 500 feet AGL in GA aircraft landing on remote grass strips and water-ways, so it would be interesting to see if the new textures are brighter, (sunnier), and more realistic in their colours, (green grass/sandy coasts and lakes),than the default textures... ;)...!

Paul...low and slow flyer... 8)...!

Just finished downloading this particular file: colorizdtxtr1.zip

I've copied my FS 2004 texture folder to the desktop!
...and copied and pasted the new textures into my original texture folder.

...a couple of examples of the result while flying from Petaluma to Point Reyes....
Notice that the new effect is fine in some places, nice and green, but shows as default in others.
The second pic shows what I am aiming for.
It illustrates an isolated bright sunny patch, which is ideal for a sunny day, but it seems to only covers a very small area...  :'(...!
I wonder if the new texture is affected by some of my downloaded scenery "mesh", (in the Scenery folder).

all very interesting, tho'... ;)...!

Paul.

It is not affected by mesh, rather by landclass. You might try the other ones, maybe they replace those defaults.

Fozzer,

Aha... what you really are looking for is a new landclass for the UK.... the more closely reflects the actual lanscape.

Landclass is what determines which particular texture gets placed where on top of the underlying terrain MESH.... which is simply like a wire grid.

I'd try aq Google search for "landclass" and "UK" or something like that .

best,

............john

The "Green Textures" are very nice...8)...!

...but what I really miss in all the versions of the Flight Sim is the effect of "bright sunlight" causing the scenery to "glow" on a sunny day with clear blue skies....!
Increasing the brightness of the display does not have quite the same effect... :'(...!

I'm going to try some of the other textures in Nick's range of files...
...looking good so far...
...it just takes weeks to download each file, (27 Meg), on dial-up... :'(...!
LOL...!

Paul The Green Giant....(Can of sweet corn)... ;)...!

P.S. I have an idea that the next version may incorporate shafts of sunlight shining onto the ground through holes in the clouds....COOL... ;D...!

Look at this, that screen contains a new "mask" for terrain, like the oceanheightfield.bmp for the water. It looks great I think, try it out, gives a feel of detail. It was made for golden wings 3 but works fine in normal FS9, too.

Some examples of the "Green Textures" including the "Oceanfield" bump map effects to the ground textures. Taken from 600 feet AGL...>>>

Find and open up \FS2004.CFG file in NOTEPAD and scroll down until you find the [TERRAIN] section. Edit this line shown below to read as I have it here:  [TERRAIN] TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21  Leave all other entries under [TERRAIN] alone.  Save your changes to FS2004.CFG, and close Notepad.

Looking good...;)...!
