RTW-TWO: Leg 1 Part 1

Postby Wingo » Mon Sep 26, 2005 8:33 pm

It's mid morning of the day for the start of my Round the World attempt. I tune into the ATIS and it reports favourable conditions. I look around and see a few clouds, but nothing to be worried about. I should have been though, if i knew what awaited me. I line up with the centre line at Bankstown airport (YSBK).

Image

I fire up the GPS and enter in my destination, Scherger airport up on Cape York (YBSG)

Image

After the purple course line shows up I release the parking brake and open the throttle. It is a nice smooth take off and climb out of sydney. Little did i know at this point that 2 hours from then, something would go horribly wrong

Image

Image

The skies are clear and there is very little turbulance, "This should be a great flight!" I thought to myself

Image

The land passes under me quite smoothly, one continual roll of undualting masses. I look out the window at the sights passing me by.

Image

All is going fine, so i thought. A felt a little crackle run along my craft. Maybe it was just a small build up of static electricity? Two hours has passed. This is the last my plane is seen or heard of...

Image

There is a crack then all goes black. Light starts to slowly filter into my eyes. I'm shocked. What is this place?? Where am I?? I look around bemused at the strange scene before me. How will I get out of here??

Incase the last screenshot confuses you, I had a crash to desktop about 2 hours after take-off. It really annoyed me, but I decided to work with it.

LOL... maybe you overloaded your rig using the GPS. Or maybe the flying gods were angry at you for using it...

Sounds a bit like a nightmare I had a while ago. Looking forward to the next leg. I hope you have better luck next time out. That desktop is scary...you should show it to Killerbunny.

planned route will be up into from the SE of AUstralia to asia via indonesia then up the east coast of the continent, crossing the Pacific into Alaska Then down the west coast of the americas, crossing then going back up the east and crossing the atlantic. Pass through the middle of europe into asia and indonesia again, down the west coast of Australia and then through its centre back to my starting point.
ANd i know GPS is kind of weak, but it is the only NAV aid I can use with competence. This is only my first attempt, I will learn other nav techniques until i can do the whole trip using dead reckoning

First off, good luck on your trip.  It was a lot of fun when I did it.

As to the crash, I've had FS9 die on me like that on rare occassions and I've usually been able to trace it to bad real world weather data.  For example, on one route I flew FS9 would consistently crash about 10 minutes from my destination.  I flew the route several times trying different things and finally flew with clear weather instead of real-world weather and finished the flight successfully.

Anyway, a rtw trip will be a good experience.

No XD
That's from another site i go to. I decided since I had so many icons dedicated to FS2004 and flying, it would be OK to use that as my background ;D
