EQDC3: Leg 7, part 2

Postby beaky » Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:52 am

I'm handed off to Nairobi ATC, and a little more than 2 hrs after crossing the coast, I see what must be 17,000-foot Mt. Kenya off the left wing. I think I'm just a little south of my intended course... but it's no big deal. I'm about 100 nm from my destination, with enough fuel to go 5 or 6 times that distance. And plenty of daylight. I'm learning...

Kenya is laid out in all its glory; very pretty country. Not a peep out of the NDBs on my course yet, but I shouldn't need them.

As I approach a massive plateau, I'm handed off to Eldoret Approach. Excellent.

I can see the airport ahead as I pass over the cliffs; Won't need to descend much for Eldoret's high TPA.

Cleared to land, I make a slow, cautious approach, letting the DC3 dip a little below the glideslope. I'm determined not to arrive high again.

There's only a mild crosswind, but for  some reason I'm all over the place...

Yeeeyikes!! Terrible landing. But at least I get her stopped with plenty of runway remaining.

Well... despite the sloppy landing, this one went very well.

We all have landings like that...especially in the DC-3!

Going straight is not usually my problem with that sucker... it's getting it low and slow early enough. Seems I've almost licked one problem, and created another.  ::)

Well, I passed Mt. Kenya, and after leaving Eldoret there was Lake Victoria (in clouds). After that I took a detour to find Stanley Falls, but... well, you'll see.
I'd love to have checke out Victoria falls, but it's a bit out of the way on this trip;D
