The soviet/Nato codenames was in the same way. In the "heattest days" of the cold war, information about real designations of soviet aircrafts was scarce. To avoid identification errors in radio transmissions the code was adopted. F for fighters (Fishbed, Flogger, Foxbat, etc), B for bombers (Bison, Bear, Badger, etc), C for transports and H for Helicopters. The words are short and phonetically easy to speak and hear.


Thanks Stratosaurus! But still, why are they so terrible, that's what I'd like to know... maybe NATO didn't want to give them a 'cool' name like, maybe, tigershark or hornet (or warthog :)) because the Russians were the bad guys... or maybe it was so the pilots didn't get scared by having to intercept something with an intimidating, aggressive sounding name...  :D
