AOPA/Flight1 Commander

Postby jknight8907 » Sat Jul 30, 2005 2:08 pm

If you're an AOPA member you can download the plane they're giving away this year, a Commander 112A with a glass cockpit.

Seeing as that, I wasn't sure if this would be freeware, because the plane itself is free, or payware, because you have to pay to be an AOPA member. Hmm.

Download here: http://www.aopa.org/sweeps/fly/

Pictures:

Panel with LOTS of Chelton glass---the MFDs tell you everything you could hope to want to know.

It also has a scimitar prop which I forgot to take a picture of, looks awesome on the ground.

Not sure if this is technically freeware or payware, but who cares!  Thanks for sharing!

Yeah I would suggest that you join but at $39 that would be one heck of a payware addon..... ;D

Let me add a bit about the MFD and it's features:

The one on the right has the option of either moving map mode, or HSI mode. In moving map it's like the GPS, it shows airports and VORs. It also has a Terrain feature. Notice the red X in the upper-right-hand corner? If I were flying along the flight that's included, it would be showing terrain data on the MFD. To the left it shows wind direction, total wind speed, and crosswind component.

Below that is density altitude, OAT, true airspeed, groundspeed. In the bottom right corner is all the expected Direct To info, along with range and endurance.

The primary MFD has accel/decel bars to the left of the airspeed and the right of the altitude. This shows if you're accellerating or deceling, and if your climbing or descending. On the altitude side this is also your VSI as it shows rate of ascent/descent. There are a couple of markers that show where your destination is..notice the red circle on the horizon and the red star on the heading bar at the top. When you approach a stall a yellow marker appears and as you decel the marker sinks down toward the horizon, when you stall it turns red and falls below the horizon line.

Moving to the left....the round gauge with the bars is a EGT thingamabob....and it acutally works unlike most of them. Lean and the temp rises, and the bars go up, so you can actually lean properly. Below that at the bottom is a Chelton autopilot with preselect altitude.

As far as I could tell the doors do not open.

The plane itself is easy to fly, but likes power. If you don't keep a gob on while in the pattern it will stall.

;D

EDIT: I added 3 pictures, in the first you can see the terrain avoidance system showing the high terrain ahead...in the second you can see the trend bars next to the alt and speed bars showing decel and climbing; also note the red stall symbol in the center...as I recovered it changed back to yellow then disappeared. In the third you see that beautiful scimitar prop.

;D ;D

Forget that... how about hangar space, insurance, maintenance... fuel?
If I won it, I'd see if they'd let me fly it once before they transferred the papers to my name, then I'd sell it.  ;D For what that plane would fetch, I could probably buy an Ercoupe or Tripacer and operate it for a couple of years... ;D!!

I may just join APOA...they support GA, which the big boys are trying to whittle away...
