Postby Clipper » Tue Jul 26, 2005 6:59 am

I seem to have drifted off course and came upon this Island, I wonder if anyone can help me by telling me where I am?

Look carefully at the "mini story" There is, and always will be in future locations, a clue which should give you all a good indication as to where I am.

Ja Maaan! Welcome ta de iiisland a Jamaica 8). Everytin irae wit ya maaan?  8)

O.K. Nice work exnihilo and beefhole, let's move on to our next exotic location..see ya der maaaaaaan...

Columbus arrived in Jamaica in 1494.
Jamaica was then inhabited by a gentle race of people called the Arawaks or Tainos. They had probably come from the country now known as Guyana, where Arawak Indians are still to be found. They were short people, rather stout, with straight black hair and flattish noses; they were copper-coloured. They lived in huts shaped like those of the peasants of Jamaica. They slept in hammocks. They made rough seats of wood, and spears tipped with stone, or with the teeth of sharks. They did not have the bow and arrow. The men were skilful fishermen, and caught fish and turtle to eat. They made their cooking vessels out of clay, and burnt them in fire till they became hard. The women grew cassava, corn and sweet potatoes for food. Cotton grew wild in the island, and they twisted the fibre into cloth, strips of which they wore around their waists. They also wore strings of beads and shells...... ;)

Here you go Woozy..
Jamaican Rum - A kill-devil of a drink
THE HISTORY OF JAMAICAN RUM
The creation of alcoholic beverages from natural foods such as corn, sugar cane, rice, barley, rye and other grains has existed since time immemorial. The English, however, were the first to begin making rum from fermented sugar cane. Indeed, the word rum is first said to have been used in Barbados in the 1620s to describe an intoxicating, rough, unpleasant and overpowering liquor made from sugar cane juice. Although the exact origin of the word rum is not known, it is commonly believed to come from the English word "rumbullion" which means "great tumult." (It is important to note that the Latin for sugar is saccharum, another possibility for the word's origin).

The Tainos were on Jamaica?  I just learned this last year, I don't remember that... though I'll admit it was possible.
