I remember the day........

Postby Souichiro » Mon Mar 14, 2005 3:10 pm

That day I walked to the village centre to do some grocery shopping. When I first heard some old piston engines I immediatly thought of this bird. She was a regular at Valkenburg nas and I had seen her already a few days earlier. It was not to be, what I heard turned out to be the DBAF Mitchell. After the shopping I returned home and when I turned on the television later that day I realised that I would never see her flying again. She had crashed after an enige failure in the waddenzee. This is a tribute to the prettiest DC-3 I have ever seen the PH-DDA and the the lives lost in the crash.

They will not return to those they knew,
They will not fly again with those they gaily flew,
Into the storm,Into the clouds,Into the height,
They have passed out upon their farthest flight,
That every airman ventures;on and on,
Beyon earthmark or airmark they have gone.

I'm reading a book by a retired pilot who was flying those and DC2s.

The Book is North Star Over My Shoulder by Bob Buck...he was around at the start of Aviation.

He describes them in quite unglamourous terms.  For example they would leak in rain or snow, the heating system was known to fail, they were nowhere near as smooth as modern Jetliners (and airsickness was common), navigation by radio was prone to interference.

Another thing he mentiones is that when the third wheel was moved from the tail to the nose, they did not miss the old way at all...

He also has an interesting perspective on Amelia Earhart.  He does not dismiss her, but says that she never took the time to learn things that many pilots learned (and he mentions several female pilots who did).  He wasn't surprised when she disappeared...nor were any of his peers (or so he writes).

It's quite an interesting read!
