Put this subject in with religion and politics, subjects you dont talk about in polite company lest you tick off your friends. Just agree to disagree and leave it at that

It was never the intention to offend anyone with this poll. I thought  it would be interesting to see what the results would be. I think we should be able to react to each other in a respective way and respect each others opinion. Should I see that this is not possible the topic does not have to be locked for I will delete it myself.

;D

I guess so, but I'm glad I don't get worked up about it. But weather or not one is betteer than the other, I have concluded that I will not fly on an Airbus if I can help it for the following reasons:

1. The lack of Pilot in Command. If the pilot wants to make such a manuever that would put the structural integrety of the aircraft at risk, he should be able to do it, there may be a reason the computer did not think of. Anybody see 2001: A Space Odyssey?

2. A company that is funded by a government with a monetary loss, is suicide for the economy. What happens when Airbus is the only one left? Will they still make cheap airplanes? I doubt it, why make aircraft for a loss if you don't have to compete anymore? Mine as well make money out of the deal right?

3. As a mechanic, the only metric tools I own are:
 a. An adjustable wrench (a Crescent Wrench)
 b. A Hammer
 c. A 6mm Bullet

I quit looking at the abilities of Airbus aircraft after the 'computer knows better' incidents, and looked at the economical issues of a government vs. Boeing.

No flames intended, just my current beliefs.

Beliefs won't get you anywhere.

Boeing was a great company back in the 1950s/60s/70s, but they somehow just settled on their fame and good sales instead of pushing forward the development of new commercial aircraft. So this was Airbus' chance and they got their fair share of the market.

I'm a fully rated Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, there are a few planes I WILL NOT FLY ON.

1. Any Airbus
2. Fairchild Metroliner III (or any derivative)

Nothing against you, I just want make a point about that.

Long ago, the U.S. quit using F-4 Phantoms, as they decided the airframe was too old and couldn't handle anything they wanted to do. Why use an F4 when you have F-18's and F-15's? So Isreal, using their brains, ordered many modified F-4's from Boeing. These came really cheap, cause it is outdated right? They ordered them with no engoines or avionics, had a canard on the nose, and a few other structural changes. When they got the airframes, they installed their own avionics (best in the world), and had the engines from an F-15 installed also. What did this accomplish? The Isreali Air Force now has an aircraft that can perform about 90% of what an F-15 can do, for about 1/10th the cost. So for the same cost, they can have 10 F-4's that do 90% each of one of our F-15's.

Just because some of the aircraft are older, does not mean they have served their life, it just means they are a proven design that can still compete. Why make something that is only 10% better that costs twice as much and required an entire revamping of operations, maintenance and logistical systems?

And yes, beliefs will get me somewhere, if I didn't believe I was an American Citizen, what good would I be? But I won't say anything specific about you in this post, I'll just state what I believe to be facts. (ie. the government says Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK.....)

The F-4s from the Luftwaffe are about on the same level as the israeli ones, but still our MoD decided to dump them in favor of the Eurofighter. If Israel can upkeep five hundred different types of aircraft for five hundred different kinds of tasks, okay, but since the modern military seems to evolve into a small multi-task force, it needs newer kinds of aircraft.
And the term 'multi' applies to Airbus, too, since you can fly different Airbus models with the same certification and without any need for an additional training on that type (Nexus can back this point up, since he knows more about Airbus than me).

Just because some of the aircraft are older, does not mean they have served their life, it just means they are a proven design that can still compete.

But the maintenance costs and noise/environmental regualtions are slowly eating up the advantages.

And yes, beliefs will get me somewhere, if I didn't believe I was an American Citizen, what good would I be?

Here's just something to think about...ever model of any airplane built has crashed at some point in time (the vast majority anyway)...now when Boeing's 747 goes down...you lose a good amount of the passengers.   When a plane as massive as the A380 goes down...it's certain you'll loose just about everyone.
