A new toy!

Postby Staiduk » Fri Jan 21, 2005 11:21 am

'Lo all!

I've had this model for a while; but it flew absolutely miserably. The Moller Skycar looks cool, but was an absolute  nightmare to handle.

Well; I was bored; so started playing with it. And if I might say so; I've created what has to be the most bitchin' .air file I've ever managed!
I mean really; modesty aside; I'm really impressed with it.

Image  Here's the Skycar with engine pods folded - starting up for a flight to Toronto.

Image  It has a very clear; concise DVC. Has a real 'car-like' feel.

Image  Taxiing in the Skycar = driving. With the engines at high idle she drives nicely at 50mph with no instability and no risk of suddenly taking off. This is on paved roads - those spindly legs won't take rough ground very well.

Image  Of course; being an ex-recce soldier; I saw at once the value of a machine like this - that can either hover nap-of-the-Earth or cruise at 350mph@20,000'. So I had a bit of fun and made a Canadian Army skin, gave it my old callsign (13A) and went reconnoitering! :D
Here; we cruise at 15,000' on the way to the target area.

Image  At the target; doing a recce on an airfield in Croatia. Advancing through the trees; walking speed.

Image  Airfield under observation - using the trees for cover.

Image  Mission accomplished - pulling pitch for home!

Man; this has been fun! I'm E-mailing the designer of the Skycar model to see if he'll use this .air file - it's a vast improvement over the original; flies as closely to the real thing (if the real thing could actually fly; which it can't) as I could manage. Hope he likes it too - and hope you like the pics! ;D

I'm interested to see how it performs, could you send me the .air file and tell me where to get this skycar so I can experience your tinkerings?

Ive been watching Moller for years, they have taken longer to develope anything than anyone ever has in the history of time and space. anyway, Ive also been messing with that freeware sky car, and you are right, the original .air file is horrible, do you think you could send me your version?

The aircar is available here on SimV...

I hope he does give you permission...I tried it and failed miserably!

Hi guys; just one problem:

NOWHERE in the gigantic mass of docs, drawings, screenshots, etc. did the designer put a valid E-mail; so I guess I won't be contacting him after all.

OK; I'll send it out to anyone who asks - and it seems people here have quite an affection for this weird little craft; I hadn't had my original post up for 10 minutes before requests started coming via PM. ;D

I'm not sure of the legalities involved; but if I can't contact the dude - as he provided no way to contact him except a snail-mail address - then I can't contact him. I'd dearly love to put the updated files onto SimV; but without the original designers permission I suppose that's impossible. I'll therefore send them out to anyone who asks. :)

Cheers!

I think that if you make an effort to contact him and can't do so, then you are within your rights to post it on SimV...

Ask Pete about that though...

Oh, and if you cannot post here, please let me have a copy of that air file...

Is that the car available here on SimV?

Yes it is - and I've sent you the file. ;D

EDIT:
All that said; I'd love to release it here on SimV; however I think its best to wait a bit until I get some feedback from those trying it. ;D

Well installed it, played with it, and like it (though the new .air file has a different name than the original, it seems to work as it should...only thing is that the Cheetah and one other texture don't show anything...know why.

Also, when I crash the aircar (good thing this is only a simulator, it crashes FS9 as well (mostly)...

Oh well...at least I can fly it!  Be posting soon (and I am wanting to master it!)

Way ahead of you buddy...the reason the other textures don't show up is because those parts of the aircraft.cfg point to a different model...

For the Cheetah and Police textures, (Flightsim.1 and flightsim.2) change the line

Model=1

to

Model=

Then start FS and you will see the missing textures....

Still figuring things out.  The radio doesn't tune right either ...but I may know how to fix that (something in the radio section I think).

For flying it, I have the barest of knowledge of how to do so and have a difficult time critiqueing the dynamics.

I do like it...the CTD could be caused by the AutoSave I have installed too.

Who knows...that is low on my list of worries at the moment.

And thanks again for the update!  That adds a new aircraft to fly! ;D
