Quite an experience with the Experience

Postby Steve_Butka » Thu Jan 06, 2005 2:39 am

So I finally got around to testing out the 737 Experience after getting back up to school after my holiday.

I dl'ed her tonight and was very impressed.  I set up an easy and short flight from Newark Intl.  to Syracuse-Hancock Intl. in upstate New York and everything was going fine...

The skies were clear, although the cloud cover was pretty low.  I was at 2,100ft and well above the clouds below me.  I even spotted an airstrip on a plateau that was maybe 30 ft. above the cloud level-- it looked like an airport fit for heaven.

I got the clearance for my final approach from the ATC and just as my instrument started to kick in with the descent into RWY 10 at Syracuse, the weather began to growl.

The wind was way too much to handle for my aircraft.  I switched off my ILS at the last moment.  I was tempted to abort the landing because we were below our minimum visibility, but I was disoriented and nervous.  I took the controls.

My First Officer sat back and shouted instrument readings as I eyed my GPS and descended into the airport.  I prayed to God that my reading were accurate.

Thank you, God.  Not bad for a visual approach with less than 2mi. visibilty and roaring winds and turbulence.  I felt better now, and my shirt was drenched with sweat.  I brought her in softly as I could.

Runway conditions forced me to use full all of my braking instruments.  As I touched down I smiled at the sound of the spoilers flying upwards and my nose gear touching asphalt.

I parked her at Gate 2 and shut her down.  I sat there for about 20 minutes after the engines shut down to cool off in the cool cockpit that was fast asleep.

ps.  this was also the first time I flew an entire flight in the DVC.  It was a great experience thanks to very good job by the 737 Experience team.

If you dl the package, make sure you read the text file about the birth and completion of this project-- great stuff. :)
