Thanksgiving flight!

Postby jordonj » Thu Nov 25, 2004 7:23 pm

Well, we meant to leave at the crack of dawn, but Russel and Dee Dee were not inclined to get up when I did, so I was there first.  I know better than to wake them up myself (Dee Dee has been known  to throw things).

Instead I went down to the airport and went over the flight plan...(wrote down codes to the VOR stations, what airports to request transition from etc.)

Image

I took the plane over to gas it up.  While I was doing so, I thought I head something and looked up to see Dee Dee running over to me waving her arms (Russel was just strolling along way behind her...he's not given to hysterics).

Taxiing down to the active...

Image

Because this would be a long flight, I wanted to get above the cloud layer.  I went to about 11,000 feet.  The wind was wild.  After a few times of holding altitude only to have the wind change direction and loose 500-1000 feet, I gave in and turned the AP on to help with the altitude.  With the winds aloft, I think I flew sideways most of the way...

I snapped a few of the clouds...

Can't remember what town that was, but I know it was still in Georgia...

I began my descent shortly before crossing the state line into Flordia.  The soup came and went, but mostly, it came.  The active was a non-ILS runway, so I had to use my GPS to get my orientation!  When I got myself lined up, I was way high...

Image

But I did get myself down and parked (between a Cessna and a Piper).

Thankfully, we had Salmon as well as Turkey (something I can't stand).  Russel and Dee Dee are sleeping off all the food they ate.  It's night now and I'm back at the Airport (I'll be going back to rest at Russel's friend's house soon though).

The thing is, Russel's friend is also an aviator and has a plane to show me tomorrow!  I can't wait!

Interesting looking bird there with the engine mounted like that. It is always fun to fly in inclement weather, nice pics and story!  ;D

Beautiful shots and a good tale, jordonj; thanks.

Has anyone ELSE noticed, though, how uniformly LOUSY the 'real weather' is this year, all over the world?  :)
