A 737 isn't meant to land here!

Postby iwannaflySC » Thu Nov 18, 2004 1:50 pm

Hey folks.  Been a while since I've sent any shots on here.  Anyway, been flying around the Himalayas a bit, and thought I'd take a Jet Airways 737-500 to Paro, in the Kingdom of Bhutan (it's the only airport there in FS9).

Turned out to be a rather tough approach!

ATC cleared me for the approach for rwy 15, with the airport at 2'o clock.  Except I'm 5 miles to NW, about 12,000 feet above the runway!  Instead of doing the logical thing, a 360 to loose altitude, I fly around the valleys to come in from the other side.

Yikes! I'm supposed to land there?

Ok, don't panic. Flight attendants, get the barf bags ready!  And pray I clear that hill and those trees.

On the ground! Yay! As the skid-marks show, we barely touched down on the runway!

ATC then snarls at me "Jet Airways 344, you weren't cleared to land.  Clear the runway!"

Well, sir, I ain't takin' off again, so get over it!  Guess that's it for my pilot's license.  I'm taking the bus back ... (or, maybe, a mule cart?) :)

[This also makes me want to find out what aircraft actually do fly into Paro!]

Hey squeek ... yes, I was rather long on the landing.  I was too high ---  the airport is in a kind of box-shaped hole in the terrain.  Once I cleared the lip, I needed a descent rate of nearly 1100 fpm to get anywhere near the runway! I did manage to stop in time, using maximum autobraking.  A rough landing for sure!
