Crazy Marines....

Postby MIKE JG » Wed Oct 27, 2004 12:08 am

Rumor has it that a bunch of Marines will try anything....So the Navy boys have suckered them into a bet.

No they wouldn't.....
Image

Full power, lots of smoke and the guy in the green is betting they don't make it off the end of the ship.....
Image

Well they're off.....
Image

But......That's only half the bet.....
Image

No, they wouldn't, would they.........All hands clear the flight deck, this is gonna be ugly.....
Image

Ahh....Perfect 3 wire, just one problem, no hook!!!
Image

Well these determined Marine aviators have won their bet, or did they.  The Naval officers say that since the Herc never stopped and proceded to fall into the ocean off the front of the carrier, that the Marines didn't fulfill the requirement of the bet.  The Mariine avaitors would like to argue but right now they're awaiting a hoist aboard a Navy helicopter to get them out of the drink. :o

Oh yea, don't ask how a C-130 got on board in the first place.

All kidding aside this was actually accomplished back in the 60's.  A C-130, I believe a Navy version of course, actually made an unassisted landing on a carrier using the short angled landing deck, a lot of headwind and a lot of reverse.  The aircraft had the words "Look Ma, No Hook" (or something close to that) painted on the nose for the occasion.  Ahh the good old days....

All you need was the RATO and there would have been no doubt about the outcome...  ;)

Altogether, the crew successfully negotiated 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 unarrested full-stop landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs at gross weights of 85,000 pounds up to 121,000 pounds. At 85,000 pounds, the KC-130F came to a complete stop within 267 feet, about twice the aircraft's wing span!

Unbelievable!!!!

Nice shots BNL!  :) And very interesting story.  I flown on alot of hops on that bird in '68 and '69 and never would've believed that lumbering ox could've gotten off a carrier.  And hey, lets watch that stuff!!  We're not crazy, just misunderstood.  ;D ;D
Thanks for the link Ken, cool videos!

I threw up on a Lieutenant in one of those once.  Mind you, I was a E-4 at the time, so that seemed pretty important then.  Now it seems hilarious.  I had eaten some MRE's labeled 'Not for Pre-flight use' just before I boarded the plane...  :P

Kevin, Pleeeeze let it have been a 2nd looey fresh out of OCS.  ;D ;D  We used to have so much fun with those guys!   ;D  Most had less time in the Marine Corps than we (enlisted and NCO's) had in country.
