Using heasink paste...

Postby Mees » Sat Sep 22, 2007 12:37 pm

How do I do that? 'Cos my CPU doesn't really have any anymore and so I bought some, and it's in a container of about 5Cm. What you'd say, just put in on in one time?

(a) "Google" for instructions and advice.
(b) Get your Dad to do it.

Get it wrong and you will toast your Processor...trust me!... :o...!

People have differing opinions on repacing the thermal paste on a CPU/heatsink.
Method 1: Apply a small (pea size) amount in the centre of the CPU contact and apply the Heatsink. The downward pressure from the heatsink will spread the paste evenly.
Method 2: Apply a small amount again, as above, but spread it thinly and evenly with a credit or similar plastic card and then mount the heatsink.
I've used both methods and have had no problems with either.
Most important is to remove EVERY trace of the previous paste.. A good pure alcohol* will do the trick better than most. (Available from most chemists/pharmacies)  ;)
Good luck.
*Vodka doesn't work very well.  :D

I use this Thermal Paste because it is so easy to apply with the brush.

White spirit a tissue and an old toothbrush.

Wipe old paste off the chip and the heatsink fan with white spirit and tissue.
Re-apply a small amount on the chip and totally cover it using the toothbrush but only spread a very thin layer so you can almost see the writing through the paste.
Check for any lumps n bumps as these leave gaps and eventually cause over heating.
Replace chip and attach fan.

Every TIM has a different way to apply it. Some call for putting a half pea size drop on and letting the heatsink spread it and some call for spreading it yourself. It really dosen't matter much unless you need -1C or something. Also as a rule of thumb you want a VERY thin layer. Just enough to fill/bond the microscopic holes and gaps inbetween the HS and IHS. Anymore reduces heat transfer. Really it is hard to go wrong with a drop on the center and apply HS.

Many things have been used for TIM such as Vasseline and Toothpaste.

I usually use a credit card for TIM spreading. Its like a mini putty knife works great.

My heat Sink Paste applicator package included a Credit Card-like spreader.*
