good techniques from seperating plane from pic?

has anyone got some good methods for this? i am thinking of making an edit but this is the thing that moves it from a good image into a better one... the seamless cut

lets assume i have GIMP for this... im downloading it at the moments

There is, from what I've heard (I'm no expert, so don't quote me) something called a 'pen tool' - basically you cut out your subject with a (very long) series of straight lines connected by points - kinda like a super-precise version of join the dots - you click to creat a point, go round the entire subject, and finish off by pressing enter. during the time you are performing this action you can zoom and scroll and there is no problem.

As I said, I'm not sure whether all of this is true - it is what I believe to be true, having heard a few snippets from people who actually do edits (I don't) - people such as mic....

Like already stated the pen tool is a very good way to cut out the plane... However I use something called the 'background eraser' and simply it will only erase a certain range of colours within the area of the brush tip...

hmm, know how to do that in GIMP? and also, what if the background wasnt as even as it is there (before i used a 'set transparent' tool on this program which removed some of the background... but this looks more effective)

The pen tool is the most precise way to select a subject. After that it's all about layers and layer masks ..... which unless you have photoshop or paintshop you won't have to worry about them.

Yes but a good way to extract an aircraft from a plain-ish background with Photoshop (although not always very accurate) is with the Filter > Extract option  ;)
