Some "auto-biographies" of famous combat pilots, particularly those published soon after the end of WWII, were actually written by ghost writers & tend to be a tad over-dramatic at times. I suspect the authors used a little poetic licence. I remember a sense of deja-vu when reading of the same unique event described as happening to 2 famous pilots in their separate "auto-biographies". Once would be difficult to believe. The chance of it happening to 2 people is almost impossible.
