Never mind. I suspect the creator of the FS Auster got a bit confused as to the purpose of those hand-holds. :)

The Auster J2 Arrow had an 85 hp Continental (US built - not Rolls-Royce) & no flaps. I think it was a tad underpowered. That might be the one your chap was referring to.

Hi Doug.... <<s

Which Auster was the two seat trainer?

I thought it was the J4.

It looks like the J2 has four seats.

Still all in all the Auster is a much nicer aircraft with updated avionics and with a good strong engine. The Auster is a much nicer aeroplane than most light tricycle landing gear types like the Cessna 172 or Piper 140...etc.

And, what a view... <<q

The J2 is a two-seater. The Auster J5 Aiglet was a 2/3-seat trainer. http://www.austerhg.org/type_list/index.html

In my experience Austers are generally heavier than comparable US-designed aircraft. The original Taylorcraft was beefed up to meet British airworthiness requirements & the later marks followed suit. Even the latest Beagle-Auster variants were 'rag & tube'. I prefer the taildragger Cessnas & Luscombes.

Hi Doug... <<q

Every one has their preference when it comes to things like aircraft, boats and off road vehicles...

Me, I am a DeHavilland lover of aircraft.
I grew up around them.

The Taylorcraft of England Auster was a work horse in all kinds of flying, from military, utility, training and private ownership. There are few bugsmashers from any country than can compare with it. The aircraft is still a prize to own.

Although it is hard to compare the Auster and the Fleet Canuck they were two aircraft I loved to fly, unfortunately one of my brothers ended up getting the Auster and years later I bought a Canuck.

From farmers field to farmers field, grass strip to grass strip and even blending in with commercial traffic during the late 50s and 60s landing on hard surface both aircraft performed beyond many aviators expectations.

Grass Roots Flying they call it, HMM...perhaps there is a paragraph or two I might touch on the subject at a later date...

Again thanks for all your input Doug...much appreciated...
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
