Short testflight after FS-GS ...

Postby Harold » Mon Jan 29, 2007 7:14 pm

Hi All,

This weekend Micheal Greenblatt went under the hood of my sim and 'fixed a few things'.

Here's the result ...

For those of you who wonder: apart from sight distance, every setting in the sim (FS9) is maxed out and I can run it at a steady 36 FPS
without stutters, hickups or shivers. And that is with 90% traffic, real world weather generated by Active Sky and Flight Environment 3D Clouds.

And I don't think I have a killer machine; I have a three year old Dell Dimension 8300 that runs a P4 3.2 Ghz. HT with 2 GB of 400 Mhz. RAM,
paired 1 GB sticks. My video card is a Gainward Bliss 7800 GS+ 512 in an AGP slot.

I think I already had nice graphics but now my performance is way beyond anything I thought possible and my graphics are even better!

So ... yes, seeing is believing and I believe FS-GS is well worth the money. If you can afford it you should try it!

Thanks Michael, I'm looking forward to future conversations ;)

Harold,

I was speaking to Michael last Friday, I am going to make a few hardware changes then let him loose with a fresh install.

He's very professional and I'm looking forward to the results.

Your shots look excellent, definitely money well spent.

Keep the shots coming.

Very nice pics indeed..... it isn't a very good comparison with the set of old shots you referred to though - flying that great Beech 18(?) over a superb addon - Orca? I'd be interested to see you flying that Commander over those mountains on a sunny day, just like in those old shots, just to be able to see if there's a difference. For example, if the glare on the hull of the Commander has now been replaced by a natural metallic shine, as I believe Ramsa said this was a sign that your system wasn't set up properly. I'm 100% convinced (after reading all the good feedback) that the FSGS treatment will make your system perform like a greyhound on speed, with everything maxed, where before you may have been struggling with blurries and stuttering. So undoubtably worth the money... I noticed a big difference in performance when I started using 0+0 defrag instead of default MS, for example. But, aside from the blurries, I'd like to see if the graphic look really can be improved by systems optimisation....

Why? Not being a troll, just curious. I've updated my comp many times and have really just noticed an increase in how far I can move those sliders, how much more detail and light I can include with the system running smoothly. I was running an X700, now I have a GF7900 and I've seen no difference in graphics quality between the 2. So I'm curious...

Looking at the angle of the sun in that shot, I think that may just be a weird  shadow-thing... I've found FS shadows to be a bit odd most of the time, regardless of settings... no gradation, if you know what I mean.
In real life, ambient light will diffuse shadows on the side farthest from the sun, even late in the day... in FS, shadows look sort of painted-on.

Hey Harold,

Nice to hear what Michael has done to your PC. His abilities are amazing, and what he can do to Flight Sim is awesome.

I did tell you that you won't be sorry.

Send me an email sometime and let me know how things are going.  ;)

Chat later,
Steve.
