And if it flies correctly, you should go tail first into the dirt every time you try going into the vertical!

I think because of the large wing area, and the high T-tail, whenever the Javelin went more than something like 45 degrees nose high, it went into a deep stall, because of the lack of airflow over the tail. I'm sure someone could explain it a little better (and more correctly, no doubt).

There's a discussion on the "deep stall" in the Flight School forum. The Javelin suffered from a lot of problems but being a "double- delta" configuration I hadn't realised it was also affected by this phenomenon until now.
Javelin's high T-tail cost the life of pilot Peter Lawrence. This happened on 11 June 1953, over 10 years before test pilot Mike Lithgow was killed in the BAC One Eleven incident.

So it is. I visit Duxford regularly but can't say I've noticed it. Oh, hang on. I might even have a photo of it somewhere. The Javelin was never one of my favourites.
